DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESIDENTIAL GENERATORS

Looking to buy a generator for home in Toronto and throughout Ontario? Paramount Power Systems can help. Here are the different types of generators you can get from us:

  • Propane generators
A propane generator is a power-generating device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy using propane as its fuel. Since propane is a highly combustible gas, it is ideal for generating heat and energy. Many residential homes outside the city of Toronto run on propane. Some homeowners choose to install a separate tank for the generators while others increase the overall size of their existing tank to accommodate the generator when it is running.

  • Natural gas generators
A natural gas generator is essentially a device that transforms pure natural gas into energy by burning it as a fuel. They are a top-rated solution for businesses and homes that require an emergency power backup. The majority of homes and businesses in Toronto run on natural gas.

BENEFITS OF HAVING RESIDENTIAL BACKUP GENERATORS

A power backup for residential homes is almost as crucial as in commercial or industrial areas. This is because many or our appliances run on electricity; without power, your home loses more than half its practical benefits. This is why one should always look for a reliable power backup solution to help them manage power cuts without any problems. Over the years, we have helped many homeowners around Toronto get generators for home.

Here are some benefits that home backup generators can offer you:

  • Uninterrupted power supply. These generators can restore the power to your connection in the blink of an eye, so you don’t have to stay in the dark for long.

  • Many of the security systems in a house operate on electricity,so having a power backup means complete security throughout the day.

  • Food kept in freezers gets spoiled if there is even a short power cut in the area. With a power backup system in place, you won’t have to worry about it.

GENERATORS AND BACKUP POWER

Do you ever wonder how a generator works? Don't worry; we at Paramount Power Systems can explain the functioning of a residential generator to you in three simple steps:

  1. In the event of a power outage, your generator senses that power is lost.

  2. Within seconds, your generator will begin functioning, restoring electricity to your home.

  3. The automatic transfer switches in your generator send power to your home and will remain operating until power is restored.

STANDBY GENERATORS

The market is abundant with different options for generators, each with various specifications and dimensions.  As the name suggests, standby generators are programmed to wait for power outages and start functioning as soon as they detect one. Our Kohler standby generators are entirely automatic, and they remain in standby mode when you have power. These generators will function regardless of whether you're home or away, supplying power to your property's electrical circuit breaker box whenever necessary. Another feature of these units is that they 'exercise' themselves routinely, which means that they run diagnostic tests on themselves without any intervention on your part.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between a generator and an inverter?
Generators work on the principle of electromagnetic induction - they convert mechanical energy from an external source into electricity. Inverters are electronic devices that convert direct current into alternating current. Inverters have multiple circuits for load management.

What size of generator should I purchase for my home?
Use the sizing tool to know the power requirements of your home based on this, you can determine the generator size you require.

How often should I check the oil level?

Depending on the size and model of the generator, check the oil level after every eight to 24 hours of operation.

Can I use my old generator with my new generator?

Two generators can be used simultaneously by connecting them in a parallel format. This process electrically combines the power output of two generators. However, it would help if you always remembered the parallel connection of generators does depend on factors internal to the generator, i.e. the engine capacity, engine configuration, generator design, and regulator design, etc. Thus, it would be best if you put considerable thought into the overall design based on your system's primary purpose.

What does an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) do?

An Automatic Transfer switch transfers power from a common source (like a utility) to an emergency power source (like a generator). This happens automatically when the standard source fails, like in cases of a power cut. An ATS senses the power cut and signals the engine panel of the generation to kick into operation. Similarly, when the standard source gets power back, the ATS signals the generator's engine panel to stop its operations.

Do I require a generator that has a long tank?

This depends entirely on the specifics of your situation. A standard propane tank contains fuel that usually lasts 2-4 hours. A long tank, on the other hand, has enough fuel to last overnight. Thus, if your requirements are for a power backup that can run for long hours, it is advisable to opt for a long tank. However, if you require the generator for only short periods, a generator with a standard tank works just fine.

Can I Install My Own Standby Generator?

No. You must be a licenced gas fitter and a master electrician as well as a certified Kohler representative to install our residential standby generators. The permit required can only be pulled by a master electrician with your local hydro company.

Do I Have to Maintain My Generator?

Absolutely. All types of generators require routine maintenance. For instance, standby generators require yearly maintenance. If you'd like to learn more about your generator's maintenance needs, please get in touch with our sister company, Ronnie's Generator Service.

How Long Will My Generator Last?

Typically, both standby and backup generators can last up to 25 years and more with proper maintenance. Routine maintenance is a crucial aspect of prolonging the life of your generator.
